We are thrilled to begin the new academic year with our Education Committee Kick-off Meeting! I’ve had the opportunity to speak with many of you personally about some of our ideas:

  • Train a cadre of volunteers to go into local elementary, middle, and high schools to give presentations on the Arab World and who Arab Americans are, targeting schools with both an interest and a space for inter-cultural engagement (International Weeks, Arab-American months, etc).
  • Mobilize parents to increase their role in their children’s schools by monitoring curriculum and bringing the Arab-American voice to discussions and yearly-planning events.
  • Engage in community-wide cultural events such as regular dabkeh lessons.

It is our goal for this effort to be organically led by YOU, our membership base. I’m looking forward to meeting with you as we brainstorm the most effective ways to engage with our local communities and raise educational awareness about our heritage and rich presence as a solid community in this country.

We would love for you to join us for this kick-off brainstorming session, Tuesday, August 18, 2009, at 6:00 p.m., at the Vapiano’s in Ballston (Arlington, VA).

Map and directions can be found here.

Please RSVP to Jennifer Atala by Monday, August 17th, if at all possible so we can give the restaurant a head count. Note: The ADC DC Area Chapter is not providing food/drink at this meeting.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact Jennifer at jennifer@adcdcarea.org or 240-678-3529.
